Right now, I’m thinking Kurt Cobain or Linde…Cobain is from Nirvana and Linde is from H.I.M.
Clapton, Page, Hendrix of course was probably the greatest, he slept with the thing and took it to the bathroom with him, he never put it down.
It’s a toss up between Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen.

Try Andres Segovia. He’s a classical guitarist but certainly above any rock musician’s musical and technical capacity.
depends on your idea of a guitarists greatness–are you looking for talent for pefection or talent for feeling? I would agree that Jimmy Page was the greatest for putting so much feeling in his melodies and solos, but he was very messy. Eric Johnson, though he is not the fastest guitarist, was is so clean and perfectly rhythmic. There are so many musicians known for their speed, like Satrioni, or Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I would agree with the statement above, Pete Townsend doesn’t get enough credit, he isn’t a technical player, but he is full of passion and raw emotion. Steve Howe of Yes is very good, Many would say Jimi Hendrix, Joe Perry of Aerosmith is pretty good, also Brian May of Queen.
i would have to say chuck berry. the reason being that every guitar player that has come after him has had to pass through the chuck berry door, you name them, hendrix, clapton, van halen, santana, and so on, they all did. although he may not have been the most technically proficient or the flashiest, there is no denying that anyone that picked up a guitar after him has had to learn his songs, as well as his licks. in my estimation, that would make him one of the greatest, if not the greatest.
