Eric Clapton
Sorry, no disrespect to you and your question, but there are many talented guitar players who are exceptional in their craft, BUT none can play like Jimi Hendrix. He was truly unbelievable. But attempting to answer your question, what about Wes or BB King? Take Care.
No. Jimi played with a lot of soul only he was able to. There are guys that are good at covers but are not able to compose anything.
I wouldnt consider Henrix to be a blues guitarist. Some R & B influence because he was a studio and touring guitarist for Motown early on. But he progressed way beyone simple blues. So to answer your question, yes, there are plenty of pure blues guitarists who are or were better at playing the blues than Hendrix was.
Check out Michael Bloomfield, BB King, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Elvin Bishop…just lots of guys. You are going to find some gems that go back into the forties and before.
Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray would be proud! This guy is a whole lot more than a Jimi clone. I saw him in concert and he blew me away.
i would recommend rory gallagher as well as the band he was in which was taste he is thonly guitar player that i know of that i admire as much as hendrix i’ve got a number of blues video’s on my youtube page if your interested.
look up songs by rory gallagher-laundromat,tore down,i take what i want, messin with the kid, bullfrog blues, sinner boy and anything from the taste records.
you might also like bands like humble pie, cream, freddie king, albert king, albert collins, magic sam, traffic, spencer davis group
Actually, to answer your question…yes…in fact, you may enjoy Hendrix, but trace back Hendrix’s roots and you’ll find plenty of great blues guitars…in fact, you may want to start off with Buddy Guy, who was playing with his teeth and behind his back, etc, long before Hendrix was…in fact, Hendrix even admitted he “borrowed” this from Guy.
Hendrix was also influenced by T Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Freddy King, etc…check out these guitarists, and you’ll be well on your way. Youtube has plenty of great videos of all of these artists, plus many more.
I’d highly recommend the track ‘Maggot Brain’ by Funkadelic. Perhaps equal of some of Hendrix’s pieces. 10 minutes of immense soulful and brilliant, brilliant guitar playing.
The story behind the track is that Funkadelic band leader George Clinton told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play like his mother had just died. And my, did it work!!!!!!!
Definitely seek this track out now. If you lov Hendrix and are wondering where to look for something as good, check out Maggot Brain. Youtube, i-tunes, soulseek, whatever….find it now!!!!
Check out the album it came from too, also called ‘Maggot Brain’. 7 tracks, 42 mintues long, immense songs, and more fantastic guitar playing.
Hope you like it…though I’m sure you will!
Actually you know who played some great blues guitar and I was surprised.. Carlos Santana.. It was over 30 years ago.. Another great player was a studio guy named, Louie Sheldon. So many guitarists interpret in their own way.. Jimi was way ahead of his time.. I grew up around that time and listened to Jimi, Leslie West, Clapton, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Ry Cooder. I was heavily influenced by blues guitarists and as I grew my tastes changed.. Loved Jimi though! Woops.. Add B.B. , Freddie and Albert King too.
Blues of Jimi…….. Like Jimi …….. In blues…….. His best work…..
Jimi……. well we know Jimi didn’t invent the blues so we don’t need to talk about that.
Jimi…… did invent a whole new sound for blues and rock.
Jimi ….. could sing with blues extremely well and gets overlooked for it.
Jimi …. is dead.
so where do we look now?
SRV. was the first to my knowledge to attempt covering Jimi songs in a big scale with labels. you can hear pros’s and con’s about SRV all day long. True Jimi heads feal any attempt claiming another guitarist, is a form of blasphemy, and off with their heads. Others will always like the new guy and then the next new guy. “Hey look who I discovered, He WAY better than Jimi.”
If you are asking for somebody who really took it to the people, and was not and exact copy, but followed Jimi styles, and pulled it off. The only one that comes to Mind, Is SRV. The voice made all the difference in the world for the complete package. I do not desire to hear SRV sing. But you are talking guitar. Jimi was the creator of this sound, a master of the guitar, a improviser extraordinaire, and with very good voice. He pulled the sound out of, who knows where. None of it existed before Jimi.
Believe me, I am not stuck on Jimi, my collection includes the traditional great ones too. I probably listen to them more than Jimi. I seek out for a great guitar when I listen no mater what genre. Hey Lets grab up some Frank Zappa. Did you listen to his guitar work
Succinctly? NO! It can’t be done.
Bluespower nailed it with Buddy Guy- he was playing what we think of as “Hendrix style guitar” in the 1950s. I saw him break into a solo that Jimi would have been proud to have played, and it just stunned the audience. When he was finished he stepped back up to the mic and said “Y’all didn’t know I could play that shit, did ya?”
The way I see it, Jimi plays like Buddy Guy, and SRV plays like Jimi.
Extra kudos to Lostinconfusion for mentioning “Maggot Brain”. There is simply nothing you can compare to that track. There’s a new 180 gram vinyl release of that album available if you want a nice clean analog copy.
Buddy Guy, if not for him Hendrix probably would not exist. Playing with his tongue and behind his head are actually things he picked up from Buddy!
Watch Ike Turner play I Smell Trouble on youtube…Tina sings.
